A wide array of crucial skills will be covered, including understanding the political landscape, effective communication of research, stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and much more.

Daniel Laing, Senior Account Director at Tendo Consulting, said:

“We are proud to launch this initiative to support universities to navigate the complex world of policy influencing. By providing tailored, interactive workshops we ensure academics leave not just with theoretical knowledge but practical skills that can immediately be used to engage with Government, Parliament, and the media.”

Carys Davis, founder of The Other Place Public Affairs, said:

“UK universities are producing some of the most relevant, cutting-edge and top-quality research in the world. In recent years, I’ve found tailored training helps build the knowledge, skills and confidence academics need to transform their research into politically astute policy with real-world impact.

“Our programme will not only benefit researchers, it will support those in Government and Parliament who are serious about developing evidence-based policy, allowing them to more easily draw on the wealth of knowledge our universities have to offer.”

The Research Policy Impact Centre offers a range of training options, from intensive mentoring for researchers to one-day courses and bitesize sessions tailored for both UK and international participants. The initiative has already seen success stories, including with Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine, showcasing the effectiveness of the training in empowering researchers to impact government policy.

Professor Nancy Preston, from Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine, said:

“Understanding how to make real-world impact can be a mystery for academics. The training gave me a much better understanding of how to work with parliament in particular but also the key role the media plays in gaining influence in public debate.”

In times of dramatic geopolitical, economic, and societal change, and in light of the upcoming European elections in June 2024, companies are more and more looking for a cohesive, cross-country offer in Government Affairs. Many of their issues must be handled on pan-European level to be addressed successfully. At the same time, an individual, “boutique”-like approach per country better serves businesses than a one-size-fits-all.

Against this challenging background, six independent public affairs agencies announce the launch of an international network of independent, owner run agencies that are dedicated in providing public affairs services in local markets. Members include KAIROS Public Affairs in France, HBPA in Germany, NOESI in Italy, TENDO in the UK, Lindblom in The Netherlands and Ridens in Brussels/EU.

We are happy to announce United Government Affairs. What sets this network apart is that every member agency has a deep understanding of their local market and a proven track record providing independent counsel with a focus on government affairs.

At the same time, we share common views on our services offer, professional integrity and drive for achieving tangible results for our clients. Clients can now select a strong local public affairs agency that is also able to provide government affairs support in key European markets as well as direct access to European policy making in Brussels and Strasbourg.

It is our intention to grow our network in the next few years with like-minded specialist PA agencies in other international markets.

This week, we supported campaign groups Unlock Democracy Electoral Reform Society Open Britain and Fair Vote UK in organising a roundtable and parliamentary drop in event as part of their campaign to draw attention to what they see as the democratic downside of the new photographic Voter ID regulations. Initial reports have confirmed that over 14,000 potential voters were turned away at the May 2023 local elections because they were not able to show a qualifying form of photographic ID, however, the actual number of voters turned away or put off from voting would actually have been much higher.

The coalition of campaign groups came together with leading stakeholders to discuss the issue. Many thanks to Bylines Networks Limited Hogan Lovells Reed Smith LLP Runnymede Trust National Union of Students (UK) Big Brother Watch Age UK Liberty (National Council for Civil Liberties) and The British Youth Council for attending the roundtable, and for all their important and informative contributions on the impacts of Voter ID on different demographics.

We were also delighted to hold a parliamentary event immediately after the stakeholder roundtable. Parliamentarians from across both Houses were able to hear about the numbers of voters turned away by region and how the Voter ID requirements have impacted on voters and the elections. Many thanks to Grahame Morris MP – Working for Easington for kindly sponsoring the room.

These events were the culmination of several months of media focussed campaigning on the issue. This campaign included Tom Brake being featured on Good Morning Britain, ITV News at 6, LBC and the Jeremy Vine show, over 400 online and in-print media hits pieces across a range of national and regional press, including the BBC, Daily Mail, Financial Times, Mirror and the Express, and even a mention on social media from Armando Iannucci!

We are very proud of our work with Unlock Democracy Electoral Reform Society Open Britain and Fair Vote UK on this important campaign.

We’d be delighted to hear from anyone who wants to learn more about our work and our services – we’re at hello@tendoconsulting.co.uk
