Today is #worldoceansday and it has been a busy week for our National Oceanography Centre team!

1) On Tuesday, as the secretariat for the APPG for the Ocean, we supported the group’s AGM and welcomed Lord Goldsmith (Minister for Overseas Territories, Climate and Environment) for a Q+A with the APPG.

2) Yesterday, we supported our client National Oceanography Centre at their Parliamentary Reception, which was attended by a number of parliamentarians including, Therese Coffey MP, Secretary of State for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and heard speeches from Chi Onwurah and George Freeman MP

3️) Today, we supported the APPG for the Ocean and its chair Sally-Ann Hart as MPs debate World Oceans Day in Westminster Hall

This week, our team was delighted to facilitate a parliamentary visit for members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Ocean to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. We provide the secretariat to the APPG for the Ocean, which is chaired by Sally-Ann Hart, and we are delighted to work closely with our client National Oceanography Centre in supporting this APPG.

The visit included a tour of the Marine Autonomous Robotics Systems and a discussion of the future of ocean technology with leading industry partners at the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre. The group were also delighted to see some gliders, autosubs, and even Boaty McBoatface!

We are also very happy to support the APPG for the Ocean’s launch into its second inquiry, into the Future of Ocean Technology. This follows the APPG for the Ocean’s first inquiry report into Blue Carbon, where many of the key recommendations highlighted were echoed in DEFRA’s Environmental Improvement Plan 2023, which was published earlier this year. This week we supported international law firm Pogust Goodhead to organise a parliamentary panel and reception on human rights violations in Iran. This timely event followed a renewed focus on women’s rights and freedoms, and debates on the proscription of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the UK.

The panel was attended by representatives across the legal, academic and human rights sector, and marked the launch of Pogust Goodhead’s new Iranian Initiative, a framework designed to document human rights abuses and seek justice for victims through international courts.

It was fantastic to be joined by an esteemed panel of experts, Alicia Alinia, Christine Jardine MP, Rana Rahimpour, Professor Javaid Rehman and Rodney Dixon KC. Many thanks also to Christine for hosting and sponsoring the event.

Last week, our team was delighted to support Financial Secretary to the HM Treasury Victoria Atkins MP’s visit to our client Brompton Bicycle to discuss the impacts of the Budget on Brompton Bicycle and on the vital role of active travel in the Government’s goals for Net Zero and Decarbonising Transport and the need to support the sector.

We are very proud of our work in transport and active travel are delighted to have supported the second Ministerial visit to Brompton’s excellent factory in Greenford in as many months!

Along with our client, The Urban Mobility Partnership (UMP) we are delighted to announce that we will be hosting an online hustings event focused on transport and air quality issues with the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates for Mayor of the West of England, on the 20th of April 2021.

During the event, candidates will have the opportunity to outline their vision for transport in the West of England ahead of the upcoming elections on 6 May 2021. Attendees will also be able to ask candidates how they would work to combat the key transport and air quality challenges facing the region today.

The event will take place on the 20th April 2021 from 6:30pm to 8pm with the following candidates:

• Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrats

• Dan Norris, Labour

• Samuel Williams, Conservative

 James Lancaster, Chair of the Urban Mobility Partnership and Head of Mobility Innovation, Local Policy and Partnerships at Enterprise Holdings will be chairing the event.
