Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery

Government Relations and Public Affairs, Campaigns and Advocacy, PR and Media Relations

The Challenge

Following the death of a recovery worker whilst attending a scene on a smart motorway, we created a campaign alongside roadside recovery bodies to call for a pause to the rollout of smart motorways.

Our Strategy

Working alongside families of those affected and recovery workers, we ran the Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery, a public affairs and media campaign that included building widespread political support, supporting the creation of an All Party-Parliamentary Group, drafting a policy report and securing widespread national media coverage including a BBC Panorama special.

The Result

As a result of our activity, the Department for Transport made significant changes to the design of future smart motorways in 2019, before scrapping the programme entirely in 2023.
