A win for the British bike sector

04.08.2025 | News and Insights

In July, the UK Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) made a welcome preliminary recommendation to maintain anti-dumping duties on pedal bicycles imported from China. Over the past year, we have supported UK cycle manufacturers to achieve this outcome, by evidencing the risks of removing these measures and helping to establish the industry-led Back British Bikes Campaign.

The decision comes as UK cycle manufacturers have faced a real and immediate threat from unfair trading practices and industrial-scale dumping.

Earlier this year, the Government removed duties on non-folding e-bikes, while protections for folding bikes, including those produced by our client Brompton Bicycle, remained in place. The latest recommendation for pedal bikes is a positive step for the wider UK cycling supply chain, supporting jobs, investment and long-term competitiveness.

Our priority all along has been to bring the sector together, present clear evidence and make the case for protections that support employment, investment and innovation. The TRA’s preliminary recommendation to maintain anti-dumping duties on pedal bikes in full is an important milestone.

While the process is not yet complete, the direction of travel is encouraging for British manufacturing and for a resilient, competitive domestic cycling industry.
