With the Tendo team busy preparing for today’s Spring Statement, Tendo co-founder and former Lib Dem Treasury Special Advisor, William De Peyer spoke with POLITICO to discuss the challenges the Chancellor faces in her fiscal update.
With increasing pressure to improve the performance of the UK’s economy, the Chancellor is set to make further cuts to welfare benefits and government departments. Whilst this is not supposed to be a major fiscal event, it will certainly be a significant one for a Chancellor constrained by economic circumstances and her own fiscal rules.
Quote in the POLITICO “the Will de Peyer, a Lib Dem Treasury adviser at the time, and now a director of the consultancy Tendo, said of Reeves: There is no wiggle room, is there? Even if she were to do something with the fiscal targets, if you look at the fundamentals of the British economy there’s not a huge amount she can do that she isn’t doing already. ..”
