Tendo were proud to have hosted a roundtable discussion on how the UK can continue to lead on tackling plastics in our oceans.
Tendo recently hosted a roundtable discussing how the UK can continue to lead on tackling plastics in our oceans.
We were grateful to have Rt Hon Alastair Carmichael MP to chair the discussion, bringing his experience on environmental issues and as Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, as well as his longstanding commitment to our ocean and coastal communities as MP for Orkney and Shetland.
We were also joined by Ambassador of Ecuador, His Excellency Luis Vayas Valdivieso in his first public meeting since chairing the most recent negotiating round on the Global Plastics Treaty in Geneva last month. The Ambassador stressed that, despite some of the reporting, real progress has been made. He called on campaigners, civil society, and the science community to come together and speak with one voice to ensure the Treaty is agreed and signed as soon as possible.
Following the update from the Ambassador, the discussion explored how the UK can continue to take the lead, including the role of science, the responsibility of businesses, and the importance of supporting smaller projects and innovation. One example raised during the discussion, was that 300,000 nappies are thrown away every minute globally, a very powerful illustration of the scale of the plastics challenge.
