On Tuesday 25th November, Unlock Democracy brought the conversation on Votes at 16 and Automatic Voter Registration directly to Parliament.
Sponsored by Phil Brickell MP, Unlock Democracy highlighted information and analysis which showcased how many 16/17-year-olds would be eligible to vote by the time of the next General Election, if Votes at 16 were to be fully enforced and supported by AVR in every constituency across the UK. There were over 50 MPs in attendance.
Parliamentarians also had the opportunity to sign an Open Letter calling for the complete independence of the Electoral Commission.
CEO of Unlock Democracy, Tom Brake, who was joined by Phil Brickell MP and Lisa Smart MP then headed to No.10 to hand in an open letter signed by over 20 parliamentarians to encourage the Government to restore full independence to the Electoral Commission. Coverage of the letter was featured in the Guardian, along with comments from Phil Brickell MP, Lisa Smart MP and Ellie Chowns MP, in addition to coverage of the event, and comments from Cat Smith MP, in the BBC’s ‘Today in Parliament’ last Friday.
